Statutory Free School Meals

Central government provides funding for all state-funded schools to offer free school meals to pupils from Reception to Year 11 who meet the Government’s benefits-related eligibility criteria. This is different from Newham's Eat for Free funding which provides free school meals to all other Key Stage 2 pupils. During periods of partial or full school closure, we contact all families who are entitled to Statutory Free School Meals to offer them food vouchers as per the government's scheme.

During the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, the Government temporarily extended free school meals eligibility to include some groups who have no recourse to public funds. If you have no recourse to public funds, please click here for more information.

School Dinners

Introduction

School dinners at Godwin Junior School are provided by Juniper Catering. Juniper hold a Bronze Food for Life accreditation awarded by the Soil Association (SA) which demonstrates that they provide meals cooked from scratch, using sustainable fish, free range eggs and ingredients that are fully traceable.  This accreditation offers reassurance that Juniper has met a set criteria developed by the SA and industry experts and has undergone an independent inspection.  They are constantly looking at new ways always to make healthy eating easier for Godwin pupils and use eco-friendly, ethical ingredients and local produce wherever possible to support local economies and protect the environment for all our futures.  In fact, their fresh fruit and vegetable supplier is based in Spitalfields and has been a part of Juniper's business for many years   Juniper are proud to also be working towards the SA’s “Green Kitchen Standard” that recognises commitment to a wider change in terms of sustainably managed energy, water and waste in kitchens.

Additionally, Juniper hold the Red Tractor accreditation providing assurance that the food served is safe to eat and has been produced responsibly.  This includes high standards of animal welfare, food safety, traceability and environmental protection and has been processed and packed in the UK.  They also hold the Good Egg Award which recognises companies that have committed to use cage-free eggs or egg products and is awarded by Compassion in World Farming.

Juniper proudly serve a number of organic products on their menus and their puddings are sugar smart!  Juniper supports Sugar Smart UK in working towards reducing the amount of sugar pupils consume by creating fun and appetising dishes that use natural sweeteners and no additives to provide tasty alternatives to traditional favourites such as Black Forest Slice and St Clément’s Drizzle Cake.

Healthy Eating

Healthy eating is at the forefront of everything Juniper do and can be demonstrated through their menus, discovery days, added value events and our pupils' continued journey of discovery which helps improve their dining experience.  Juniper's added value events focus on healthy eating, such as healthy eating assemblies and cookery classes.  This gives children an opportunity to try foods that they may not necessarily have experienced before.  It also helps to aid children in understanding where food comes from and the “farm to fork” journey.  Within the school lunch hall Juniper's educational posters all focus on positive healthy eating messages and provide some fun facts that children can understand.

Juniper's parent/carer taster sessions enable them to illustrate the healthy eating approach that children experience every day at school.  They also work with parents and carers to delivery cookery classes and provide recipe cards that are school food compliant for the whole family to sample and enjoy at home.

Lunch Menus

All of the lunch menus at Godwin Junior School are designed with input from key stakeholders. Juniper work with their Dietitian, Chef Trainers, Area Managers and Chef Managers to build the foundations of a menu offer. These draft menus are then shared with our pupils through the School Council and pupil feedback is sought as we believe that all children have the right to express their views in matters which affect them and to have these taken seriously (Article 12 of the UNCRC)
