Young Tree Champions

Through our work with The Tree Council, all of our pupils are Young Tree Champions

The Young Tree Champions programme supports schools like ours to embark on impactful nature-based projects that connect pupils and teachers to trees and nature, helping them to develop the knowledge, skills and tools they need to speak up to protect trees and our planet. This links directly to UNCRC Article 24 and Sustainable Development Goals 6, 12, 13, 14 and 15.

Addressing the climate emergency is something which our pupils feel passionate about and want to be actively involved in.

Building on the pocket forest which Godwin pupils planted with Sugi in the summer of 2024, within their gardening sessions our Year 3 and 4 children have been focussing on  'Trees and Climate'. This has involved learning about and taking part in activities that examine the climate services trees provide, as well as planting trees to help tackle the climate emergency. Planting our Tree Council Orchard Tree Pack provided the opportunity for our children to discuss the importance of soil quality and watering, as well as for them to link science learning about how plants absorb water through their roots.

Our after-school Environment Club has also been instrumental in raising awareness about the importance of trees in helping to mitigate the impact of global warming. Through poster campaigns and presentations in assembly they have helped to ensure that the profile of climate change and our ability to collectively have a positive impact on it remains high.
